New Blog Host, New Blog Post

I’m finally back after several years of writing in just about any place other than my lovely blog. A lot has happened in the interim since the last time I wrote anything here. Some of it was exciting, and some of it was mundane, but all of it contributed to the journey.

On the career front, I spent several years consulting for various clients through the auspices of WWT before moving on to Bluetooth SIG, Inc., as the Director of Operations and Engineering, a position I happily occupy today. I manage motivated and intelligent people who enjoy working in a positive work culture as much as I do. And no matter the experience level, each of them has something to teach me.

Of course, COVID-19 happened in there somewhere while I was still at WWT. I was flying frequently, sometimes multiple times a month, until suddenly I wasn’t. The world stopped. Luckily, my clients were still engaged and moving forward on projects, and WWT continued to move forward and innovate as we all transitioned to full-time work-from-home employees.

At some point, I became a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors, a wonderful organization for writers of all types. That may have happened before I stopped writing here, but I’m quite frankly too lazy to go back and check my dates or if I previously wrote anything about it. You, too, can join if you have a portfolio of published work of a certain size. The resources there are legion, and it’s well worth taking the time to apply if you do qualify.

Aside from that, many family vacations were taken. A non-trivial amount of home renovation occurred. Kids became adults. And the world kept on turning. We mainly returned to normal after COVID-19, and I started traveling again. This job, however, does not require significant travel, which has turned out to be a blessing. I’ve re-awakened my love of being at home, weighed the benefits of family, friends, and home time against the travel status I once coveted, and found the latter lacking. Now, I just travel for pleasure, and I’m all the better for it.

So, what of this blog? I started this blog many years ago to chronicle my studies on the road to a CCIE certification that I never did finish. The blog lived on as a place to publish tips and tricks while I was working as a network engineer and to review and write about the general ins and outs of the industry, key players and products, and trends as they developed. I wrote what I wanted to write, with no editors second-guessing the tenor and tone of my articles, and it was glorious.

It’s several years later now, and I’m rebooting the blog. Not because I need to, but because I’m in a position to have things to write about again. I also have a certain amount of experience in the industry that I can share with newer entrants to the technology zoo. Maybe someone will get something from my wild-eyed ramblings, and I can positively influence those who choose to read them.

We may get off to a rough start here, as I’m unsure where I’ll take the blog on its new journey. I’m loosely planning to focus on the business side of IT and software development—my current purview—but that may change as I go along. Ultimately, I hope you enjoy what I write as much as, or more than, I enjoy writing it. But it’s the Internet, after all, and even more of the Wild West than it was years ago when I got started. So, we’ll just see what we get.
